Review: Sordid

Sordid by Nikki Sloane

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a 4.5 out of 5 star book. Fucking Goodreads and their whole star shit.

Holy. Shit. When Nikki Sloane herself tells you that a book was too much for Amazon and was banned from that platform… BELIEVE HER . I purchased this while at her table at Apollycon and while I’d dabbled in some of her stuff before, I was not prepared for this one. (She totally reeled me in with a sign that said something along the lines of “TOO HOT FOR AMAZON AND ONLY AVAILABLE HERE.” I am a sucker for that shit. LMAO) I admit that there was a lot of discomfort while reading because this was no sweet walk in the park, but her writing was so compelling that I could not and would not put this down. Bravo, Nikki. Bravo.

TW: NC, dubcon, sexual violence, violence in general, drugs (Yeah, I’m including them here instead of at the end because you should know what you’re getting into.)

Now, let me get into shit. This shit was super fucked up. I’m not even trying to curb my language here, because that’s just the best way to describe it. Holy hell. We meet our FMC, Addison, as she’s getting ready to go to some halloween party at a frat and she’s pleased that she looks like a “slut” (her word, not mine) as she’s gone the dirty schoolgirl route for her costume. She gets there and runs into the man she’s been dreaming about for 2 years since he TA’d a class of hers, Luka. They both get drunk, one thing leads to another and she wakes up at his place and he’s not letting her go. (Yes, there’s a whole scene I’m leaving out and for a reason.) He keeps her there against her will and flat out tells her that he’s going to break her will and make her fall in love with him – however, he’s as invested that she graduate and go to med school as she is, so he arranges for her to be able to keep up with her work remotely? (I told you this is some fucked up shit.) As they learn to live together – because she’s got to adapt and he’s got to get a handle on his damn feelings – she learns that his family are a part of the Serbian mob and have made some serious fucking enemies of the Russians. Fun!

Now, I know that those of you who know me in real life are probably like “WTF, Holly? This is not what you normally read!!” And you’d be right; I’m going to say that this does end in an HEA, but it takes a while to get to it, or even to see that it could ever happen. When it does, it’s like a damned weight has been lifted, though. (And there was still like 4 chapters left when I was convinced – and Nikki freaking Sloane STILL put me through the wringer! LOL)

If you are not a fan of dark romance, this is probably not the book for you. If you are intrigued and want to dip your toe in… save this book for when you’re ready for the hardcore dark/mafia romance. This is one of those situations where I can both see why Amazon may have taken it down but am also so confused that they did because there is shit on there that’s 1000x worse. This is well-written and kept me wanting to know more – and I will definitely be checking out Torrid!
