Hi everyone, it’s been a hot minute, I know. So much has gone on in the last year… and honestly, so very little of it was good. Hopefully, I’ll be more active on here again and will be able to write an update, but for now, let’s talk about spoilers. How do you feel about them? What do you think makes something a “spoiler”? Some people love spoilers and encourage them or seek them out. Some people hatehatehate them.
What brought this on? Well, I was listening to one of my favorite romance book-related podcasts and they were discussing various series and whether a book in a series is actually a standalone if it tells you about couples from a previous series. Well really, they were talking about a prolific author whose publicist maintained that someone couldn’t just dive in wherever because that would spoil the couples from the previous books in the world (not just that series), so you had to start at the first book they wrote and continue on. They seemed to have the same reaction I would have had – I mean, I will always maintain that I’m a completionist and 9 times out of 10, if I just hop into a random book in a series, I’ll go back to book 1 and start reading if I enjoyed it. When I go back and eventually read the series in order, I actually love going into a book, knowing that the couple in question will be okay. I don’t know how it will come about, but because I’ve seen them together and happy in book 5, I’m not stressed about the “will-they-or-won’t-they”.
I mean, hell, we’re reading romance, for goodness sake – most of us reading romance are looking for the HEA. I’m more likely to read a super-angsty book if I know that the couple will find a way to get together at the end. (As you might be able to tell from this, I personally hate books that don’t end in an HEA and cover a couple’s angst for more than two books. Your mileage may vary. And that’s perfectly fine. Just know that you will never get me to read multiple books about one couple, heh.)
Personally, I don’t search out the spoilers, but if I run across them I’m not going to cover my ears and start screaming “LALALA” – I’m likely going to encourage someone to spill. 🤣 Do I want to know specific plot points? Not really, because I do love to be in the moment. But do I consider a listing of tropes or content/trigger warnings a spoiler? No. Do you? Tell me all about it!
